SCRIPTURES: Matthew 26:36-46
BOTTOM LINE: Jesus warns us to be PREPARED for the trials to come.
QUESTION: Are we PREPARING for what is to come? Or are we Sleeping?
None of us knows what the future holds, but we know Who holds the future right? Seriously … if you knew when you were going to die, would your priorities change? Would the URGENCY w/ which you navigate the daily journey change?
Jesus and His disciples finished the meal in the Upper Room and made their way out of town to the Kidron Valley and up to the Garden of Gathsemene. Jesus took Peter, James and John along so they could see His URGENT PREPARATION and follow His example … and what an incredible example it was …
Matthew 26:38 … “38 Then he said to them, ‘My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.’”
Jesus was grieving because of the SIN that He knew His people would have. His heart was sorrowful and troubled. But notice what Jesus did w/ that grief … He didn’t allow it to paralyze Him did He? He didn’t allow it to terrify Him … He didn’t allow it to defeat Him … or make Him run away from what He knew was in front of Him … He used it to PREPARE Himself! He knew the anguish of what awaited Him … so He had to PREPARE w/ PRAYER …
And what were Peter, James & John doing? Were they watching Jesus … and listening to Jesus so they could follow His every move?
Nope … in fact … they’re sacked out … sleeping … I mean it is probably after midnight, late into the evening by this point … Their belly was full … the night was so peaceful in so many ways … and yet remember … Jesus JUST told them to watch … and Jesus had JUST told them to pray … and Jesus JUST told them that trials were ahead of them … and He was telling them that so they could get PREPARED.
And that PREPARATION included struggling thru this intense session of PRAYER alongside Him … but instead, they slept …
1. Prepare in SOLITUDE.
2. Prepare in SORROW.
3. Prepare in SUBMISSION.
4. DON’T Prepare by SLEEPING.
