SCRIPTURES:  1 John 3:17

BOTTOM LINE: God has called us Individually and Collectively to meet the NEEDS of people around us!

QUESTION:  Why is there so much tension when it comes to our response to God’s calling for us to meet the NEEDS of others?

2 Quick Points of Emphasis:

  1. Serving those in their time of Need is not JUST the role of the Corporate Church … but ultimately, every single Follower of Jesus.
  2. Ministering to Human or Flesh or Temporal needs comes 2nd to ministering to their Spiritual Needs.

How can we learn from John’s words here, and the response of the Early Church  to this powerful calling and Text?  The Early Church made Disciples for sure, but part of the maturing process was showing through their help for the needy.  The way they served others, and we can learn so much from this here:

ONE:  We Minister To FINANCIAL NEEDS.

  • Sacrificial Giving
  • Leadership Distribution
  • They USED the funds (they didn’t HOARD them)
  • They distributed to those who had NEED … not necessarily those who had LESS.

TWO:  We Minister to PHYSICAL NEEDS.

We see this all throughout the letter of Acts and the life of The Early Church don’t we?

Famine would hit a region, and the churches would deploy Elders & Pastors and people on Mission to go and take Food!   They didn’t just PREACH … they ministered thru things like feeding the Hungry too!

THREE:  We Minister to EMOTIONAL NEEDS.

We ought to be the best Cheerleaders and the best Encouragers in the name of Jesus of anyone on the planet!   I Love the way The Early Church took care of the emotional NEEDS of people.  JESUS said, I was a stranger – lonely … and you took me in.

One of the absolute best ways we can overflow into someone else’s season of Emotional Need is to allow our PAST to encourage their PRESENT!

We can comfort others w/ the comfort we ourselves have received from God! … as Paul said to the church in Corinth.

APPLICATION:

Truth is, if I’m not careful,  I can tend to have a Lens trying to avoid getting involved.  It’s easier to avoid having a Lens to see those places that might require my Time, Talents or Treasures.

And yet, what we see here, is that we are to be LOOKING FOR IT!   We are to BE READY to Help and Serve and Overflow into the lives of Others!

Ken Medima … who’s an incredible musician and worship leader … he’s wrote a song that says …

If this is not a place where my Tears are understood, where can I go to cry?

If this is not a place where my spirit can take wing, where can I go to fly?

If this is not a place where my questions can be asked, where do I go to seek?

If this is not a place where my feelings can be heard, where do I go to speak?

If this is not a place where you accept me just as I am, where do I go to be me?

If this is not a place where I can try and grow and love, where can I to … to be be free?

My prayer … is THIS is a place … where we care … because Jesus cared!

My prayer is that our lives, and our hearts, overflow from God’s Presence in our life in such a way that we allow God to use us to Heal the Wounded … Comfort the Hurting … Lift up the Fallen.

That when we see a person in NEED  [Financially, Physically,  Emotionally]  you name it … that we just might take a step of Faith that God can use Us, and trust Him w/ the results!
