BOTTOM LINE:   You Have to Give Up Everything!

QUESTION:   What is it in our life that we find more valuable than Jesus?

How much do we need to be HAPPY? How big a house? How many cars? How many toys? How much stuff?

Most of us have thought before … If only I had more money … or if Only I got this position/promotion … or if only this person would LOVE me?

The world says, If you have MORE, you’ll be happy. If you have MORE, you’ve got it made. If you have MORE, you’ll be content.

We’re ultimately fed a bunch of LIES, and way too many of us believe them.  We push and shove and dream and do whatever we can to get MORE.  We start trying to finagle the numbers to make it happen … and deep within us … we have this feeling that whatever we have is NOT enough.

We keep living life as if we’re lacking something, and we never reach a place where we’re satisfied or content.

The Crowd w/in the local church honestly struggles w/ much of what Jesus had to say … sometimes we think we know a lot about Jesus:

  • Our Savior was Kind & Gentle & Loving

… but when we dig deeper into God’s Word … we discover the Lamb of God was also:

  • … a Lion of Judah

There were a lot of the teachings of Jesus and the things that came out of His mouth that leave us w/ more questions than answers. Sometimes the Words of Jesus roared like a Lion … and carried a powerful bite.

That’s what we see today when Jesus says, how hard is it for those who have wealth to enter the Kingdom of God?

Jesus’ disciples were astonished at His words, and it all started w/ this question about How Do We Experience Eternal Life?

This guy comes running to Jesus, and his Body Language tells the entire story.  He comes to Jesus in a spirit of submission … kneeling down before Jesus … and he opens the Spiritual door to discussion about as wide as possible.

How rare is it that we get that kind of opening? And when we do … how often do we walk thru it?

it’s almost as if Jesus tried to make it harder, rather than easier.

This guy wasn’t part of the Normal Crowd that surrounded Jesus … Jesus drew a crowd literally everywhere He went … HE was a miracle workerHe fed multitudesHe was a compassionate Teacher .. and the majority of the crowd that pressed in on Jesus were honestly the Desperatethe Poorthe Sick … and the Broken.

And here comes this guy, running to Jesus, and this young guy is Rich & Powerful.  He’s already humbled himself in front of Jesus and the crowd of common folks gathered … and says, Mark 10:17 17 … “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Mark 10:21 21  Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Talk about dropping the mic?

If we’re not careful, we’ll miss the hidden gem here in Jesus’ words that Mark shares … and it’s such an important truth!

Mark 10:21 21  Jesus looked at him and LOVED him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Jesus looked at the Man, and Loved Him! Jesus loved him in his desperation.  He loved him before the man did ANYTHING!

Jesus loved the man before he refused the command to do more.  The LOVE of Jesus wasn’t dependent on what this man did!

ILLUSTRATION:   How Often Do We Reverse the Order?

How often do we Reverse the order?

Do what I tell you … and THEN I will love you!  We like to put LOVE at the END instead of at the BEGINNING.

Jesus is no doubt saying the same thing to us … for us … What must We Do?

  • Sell our Self-Righteousness
  • Sell our Power or Control
  • Sell our Popularity
  • Sell our Comfort
  • Sell our Class Ranking
  • Sell our Identity in ANY arena where we are known more for that than for Jesus …

And … Come Follow Me Jesus says … for I LOVE YOU!
