SCRIPTURES: Exodus 20:14

BOTTOM LINE: Adultery!  It’s so much more of an issue of our Heart Than just the Physical or Technological violations of Commandment #7.

QUESTION:  Could We All Be Guilty of Adultery?

DOWNLOAD:

Exodus 20:14““You must not commit adultery.”

Jesus  offered His interpretation of this 7th Commandment in Matthew’s letter:  Matthew 5:27-28 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit Adultery,’ but I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully ahs already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

Adultery is much more than a PHYSICAL act! It’s a LUSTFUL LOOK … the LEERING GLANCE … the FURTIVE THOUGHT … the IMAGINED ACT.

The dictionary defines Adultery as voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a partner other than the lawful husband or wife.

But all of that is only the tip of the iceberg.  Jesus made it so clear that Adultery is the FRUIT … and LUSTis the ROOT.  If we focus only on the PHYSICAL act itself … we miss the even greater lesson and principle here in The 7th Commandment.

Jesus’ entire message there was that it’s possible to commit Adultery in the Heart … w/o ever physically touching anyone else.

Even A Godly Man Can Fall!

5 Really POWERFUL Steps Led to King David’s own Self-Destruction:

  1. He’s Not Where He’s Supposed to Be.
  2. He Allows His Eyes to Wander …
  3. He Asks a Question HE should not have asked …
  4. He Desires what is Not His …
  5. He Did Something He Never Should Have Done …

2 Key Observations:

King David didn’t get away w/ Anything!  Sin Found Him, and so we discover here a couple of Things:

  1. King David’s cover-up failed miserably.
  2. The Punishment far outweighed the Pleasure of Adultery.

APPLICATION:

SO WHAT DO WE DO?

  1. Purposely Avoid Lust-Producing Situations!
  2. Purposely Avoid Provoking Lust In Other People!
  3. Purposely Choose Purity!
  4. Come Clean w/ our Christian Brother’s and Sister’s about our Personal Struggles!

NOW … couple things here as we close:

We’ve seen today … sort of the recipe that leads to us violating this Commandment

  1. Being Where We’re Not Supposed to Be.
  2. Allowing Our Eyes to Wander …
  3. Asking a Question WE should not ask …
  4. Desiring what is Not Ours …
  5. Doing Something We Never Should Have Done …

We’ve talked about some Guard Rails and Some things that Can Help:

  1. Purposely Avoid Lust-Producing Situations!
  2. Purposely Avoid Provoking Lust In Other People!
  3. Purposely Choose Purity!
  4. Come Clean w/ our Christian Brother’s and Sister’s about our Personal Struggles!

And … IF YOU FIND YOURSELF HERE TODAY … perhaps even just been washed Clean by God, but you know there’s also some Next Step, where you might need to sit down and share w/ your spouse even? Can I suggest you do that w/ some counsel?

Maybe you come and get some counsel first … or I can direct you to some Counsel?

Because God has washed us whiter than snow the minute we ask … and I can tell you it’s possible to experience that kind of forgiveness from a Spouse too … but it’s often through a lot of Work … and Prayer … and Counsel … and my plea to you is don’t try to do it alone.
