SCRIPTURES:   Deuteronomy 8:7-18

BOTTOM LINE:   Thanksgiving was originally created as a prayer of Thanks to God for His answer to the people’s prayers.  Sometimes it’s really difficult to be THANKFUL in ALL THINGS.

QUESTION:  Living a life of Gratitude can really be hard sometimes!  But can we move from Thanksgiving to Thanks-Living?

Have you ever become so focussed on your own circumstances that you were missing the work of God in your life?

Or … fallen victim to blessing after blessing, and then being disappointed that we didn’t get another “blessing” as we know it this week too?

THANKSGIVING is a great time to remember the words of MOSES … after telling the people of Israel in Deuteronomy 8:7-18 … how they will prosper in the promised land … and after all the years of slavery and then wandering in the Wilderness … they will eat their fill … have fine houses … large herds … and their silver and gold will multiply … and then MOSES says …

Deuteronomy 8:17-18 … “Do not say to yourself, ‘my power and the might of my own hand have gotten me this wealth.’  But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who give you power to get wealth, so that He may confirm His covenant that He swore to your ancestors, and as He is swearing to you today.”

Chapter 8 is such a powerful chapter in the OT … because Moses really dials into something here that I think we probably all know somewhere in our hearts … about how everything we have is a BLESSING and comes FROM GOD … but we just seem to forget it sometimes … and we see the result of that in our Actions and even our Attitudes sometimes …

And if we could somehow remember Moses Words here and this Truth that comes from God’s Word … our lives would often be so much easier wouldn’t they?  In fact … my guess is that the lives of those around us would be BLESSED as well wouldn’t they?

APPLICATION: What Would You Say to God?

If you could be granted 1 wish that will come true right now, what would it be?

Not to long ago, a survey was taken in a magazine asking some pretty famous people 1 question … If you could be granted 1 wish that will come true right now, what would it be?

There were all the normal responses we might expect:

–       Health

–       Wealth

–       Prosperity

–       All that kind of stuff …

But one that blew my mind and blew the editors mind as well was this one … I wish that I could be given an even greater ability to appreciate all that I already have.

And this was the model of the Disciples and the Apostles … and crazy enough … their fellowship and community GREW … it wasn’t discouraging people in their day from desiring to be a part of the Body of Christ …

And THANKS-LIVING goes so far passed thanking God for the health, wealth, and blessings He’s given us in our own little Promised Land so to speak … it’s even much more than thanking God and obeying His Word and Mission because He’s blessed us w/ a great home and filled our stomachs w/ food

It’s more than Thanking God for healing … as the leper did and many others in Scripture

It’s beyond all of those … and to be honest … it can be really difficult sometimes can’t it?

I want to really challenge us this week … and we often see this picture pretty clear at CHRISTmas for sure … but I want to bring it to the surface this week of THANKSGIVING … and really encourage us to not only really, really realize even the initial meaning of THANKSGIVING …

… but what if we moved from THANKSGIVING to THANKS-LIVING?????
