SCRIPTURES:   1 Kings 18:1-46

BOTTOM LINE:   Showdown at Mt. Carmel

QUESTION:  Who are we going to Follow?  There is no Middle Ground!

Elijah’s name in Hebrew means Yahweh Is My God … which clearly defined his mission … to demonstrate or prove that Yahweh is in fact … not only his God, but the only true, living God.

During the entire length of the drought, Elijah was in hiding … because ever since he announced to the King that it was not going to rain, he became the Most Wanted man in all of Israel … in fact, in protest, Jezebel had all the prophets of God she could find put to death during the drought … but somehow, the most wanted prophet of all time was able to disappear into thin air …

And so what we see here in 1 Kings 18 is a picture of Phase II of God’s plan to reclaim His Children … and to initiate this part of the plan … God told Elijah I want you to go present yourself to King Ahab … [yep … the one that has been hunting you for 3 years] … and you let him know that I will send rain on the land.

And after 3 years of searching … King Ahab is now face to face w/ his greatest enemy …

1 Kings 18:16-17 “16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”

And don’t you know King Ahab would have loved to have just killed Elijah … and it’s funny in 1 sense, because King Ahab is the one who had led the nation of Israel into Pagan worship, away from God, and now here he is trying to blame Elijah for his sin … [none of us have every done that to someone else have we?  Or we’ve never had someone else try to blame us for their own choice huh?]

… but the only real hope of RAIN and the end of the drought seemed to be through Elijah … so the King was forced to listen to the prophet … and so Elijah gives him the instructions for assembling the people together on Mt. Carmel and let’s prepare for the Showdown …
