SCRIPTURES: 2 Samuel 16:1-13 & Psalm 139

BOTTOM LINE:   David goes from NOBODY to NOBILITY.

QUESTION:  Did you know You Were Anointed like King David?

DOWNLOAD:

Samuel’s 2 letters are considered to have been a part of the works of The Major Prophets, and Samuel is writing the Photo Album portion [the Big Picture of what is happening in that moment in history].

Today, we’re going to see Samuel [God’s Prophet]  walking the journey of obedience to God in anointing the next King of God’s People … who we’re going to see is DAVID.

And then in Psalm 139, we get to read thru David’s personal Journal of what HE was thinking and feeling personally about the experience.

David goes from NOBODY to NOBILITY.

APPLICATION:

The Leader of a Nation has an awesome responsibility … He can Unite or Divide the people [we’re seeing this even in our own country right?]

The Leader of a Nation can Build Up or Tear Down the Nation … He can be Cruel or Compassionate.

ONE:   Saul was a REBELLIOUS King. (vs. 1)

Make no mistake … Saul jumped out of the gate w/ Great Promise …

  • He was handsome … athletic … tall … on the outside appeared humble.
  • On the outside … he everything the people were looking for!.

But we’ve heard it said so many times … Power corrupts … and absolute power corrupts absolutely!  And so for Saul … his life ends in Disaster!   His heart wasn’t right w/ God …

One of the many amazing things about God is His Grace and Forgiveness.   in fact, John wrote in his 1st letter:  1 John 1:9 … “9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

TWO:  Samuel was an AWESOME man!

He was such a Faithful Servant of God.  Samuel was a miracle all the way back to his birth.  His mom and dad [Hannah and Elkanah] were childless, and Hannah was pleading w/ God and the Priest of Shiloh … Eli … blesses her, and she dedicates Samuel to the Lord from birth.

Samuel was the last of the honorable Judges … [even his own sons proved unworthy] … and he was also a Priest and Prophet … and as we see here in verse 4 … he was highly respected by the people.

What’s interesting is that God told Samuel where to look … but not who God had chosen.

INTERESTING NOTE:  In the OT,the practice of anointing by pouring oil on the head was used for Prophets … Priests … and Kings.

In the NT, Anointing expresses the sanctifying influences of the Holy Spirit upon Followers of Jesus … and we are Priests and Kings unto God in our own life too.

THREE:  David was a Man After God’s Own Heart.

More is writing about DAVID than any other character in the entire O.T.   I love what God had to say about David … years later when we believe Luke was recording the 2nd part of his story in the book of Acts

Acts 13:22 … “22 … I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfill all my will.”

What’s incredible about David … is how God took a NOBODY … and made him NOBILITY!

David went from the PASTURE … to the PALACE.

And check out David’s personal feeling and response in Psalm 139.

Can you imagine what our life might look like if that was our reflection each day?

What would change about the choices I made each day if they were rooted in the reality that God knows my Heart … that He knew me in my mother’s womb … He wove me together for His Glory and His Mission in the world?

ILLUSTRATION: We Are ALL Called!

For us, as a part of the New Testament Church …  we are all anointed!

We don’t’ have to have a mediator or anyone else go between us and God.  We have direct access to God … and His Truth … and we are filled w/ His Holy Spirit in that moment that we exchange our life w/ the Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus to help us navigate the daily journey In-Christ.

We are equipped, empowered and deployed as agents of God’s Army, serving as a Distribution Center for the Gospel.
